Garbage Disposal Use & Care

Proper garbage disposal use helps prevent clogs, odors, and damage. Follow these guidelines to keep your disposal and plumbing working properly.

To help you get the most out of your garbage disposal and avoid clogs or damage, please review the following guidelines:

What You CAN Put in the Disposal:

  • Soft food scraps (small amounts)

  • Cooked vegetables

  • Small citrus peels (to help freshen)

  • Liquid leftovers (like soup broth, without large bones or solids)

  • Ice cubes (to help keep blades clean and freshen odors)

What You Should NOT Put in the Disposal:

  • Grease, oils, or fats (can clog pipes)

  • Coffee grounds (can form sludge and clog pipes)

  • Bones, pits, or shells (hard items can damage blades)

  • Fibrous foods (corn husks, celery, onion skins – can wrap around blades)

  • Pasta, rice, or bread in large quantities (can swell and block pipes)

  • Eggshells (membrane can clog and dull blades)

  • Non-food items (like glass, plastic, paper, or metal)

🧼 How to Clean Your Garbage Disposal:

  • Run cold water for about 15 seconds before and after using the disposal.

  • Grind small ice cubes occasionally to help keep blades clean and remove buildup.

  • Use citrus peels (lemon, lime, orange) to freshen and deodorize.

  • Never use harsh chemicals (like bleach or drain cleaner) in the disposal – these can damage components.

🚨 If the Disposal Gets Stuck or Stops Working:

  • Turn off the switch immediately.

  • Check the reset button (usually under the disposal unit).

  • Never put your hands inside the disposal – use tongs or pliers to remove blockages safely.

  • Contact building management if the disposal does not work after resetting.

Thank you for helping to keep your kitchen clean and your pipes in good shape!
